So we caught that three hour, 4 o'clock bus from Delphi to Athens that we talked about before. With a little bit of Athens traffic, we pulled into the bus station at 7:40, rushed to a cab, took the 8 euro fare to the other bus station, and purchased our tickets for the 8pm bus to Nafplio at 7:56. It’s nice when things work out.
Nafplio is a cool town. Whatever you think of when you picture some sort of Italian/Greek/Venetian/French town full of cobblestone streets, cafes, boutique shops, and beautiful architecture….that’s what the Old Town in Nafplio looks like. Incredibly beautiful. Incredibly romantic. Incredibly glad to be here.

There are medieval castles, historic structures and monuments scattered all over town, dating from ancient times to the Ottoman Empire, but that’s not why we came to Nafplio. Really, truthfully, you come for the charm.

Being low season, we scored another really nice room right in the heart of old town for about 30 euro. Just so you know, this is about 50% off the going rate…but it is also about 200% more expensive than most rooms we stayed in last year. Maybe more. I keep telling Sara that we must be doing something wrong; there must be worse places we can stay in. But for now, we’ll have to stick with our overly-nice, budget accommodations. Rough life.

What did we do in Nafplio? Well we almost had waffles and Gelato for breakfast, but cooler heads prevailed and I had to eat a delicious spread while overlooking (another) Syntagma Square instead. Maybe next time.

We walked. We walked. We stopped. We walked. We shopped. We walked some more. Eventually we made our way around the entire peninsula checking out the sites, stopping in countless shops and just taking it all in. I had read that this was one of the prettiest towns in Greece. A well kept secret. I think the secret might be out. Not crowded by any stretch of the imagination, but the place had the right amount of buzz. And we both really enjoyed it. The next time you’re in the area, we highly suggest you swing by.

Blessed with an unseasonably warm day, about 72 degrees, we eventually did make our way to a beach to catch some sun, read a little, freeze a little in the water, and relax a little after a few days of long travel.

Some more exploring and after dinner we tried a traditional Baklava flavored Gelato. Until next time, I’ll just let you image how good that was.

From Nafplio, with love,
Will+Sara
